At Smith Family Funeral Homes we believe that we should follow through with families we serve for a year. We believe it is a necessity when a family is grieving. One way that we do this is through our program of Continuing Care.

Continuing Care

Continuing Care is a follow-up program designed to meet the needs of the families we serve during the first year of the loss of their loved one. A series of four books are sent at various times during this period. These books are designed to speak to the issues most families will be facing at the very time the books arrive. The titles include:

  • Will I Survive This Pain?, which explains the grief process to the family.

  • The Grieving Reaction, which deals with the presence of anger in grief.

  • Grief Is A Family Affair, which explores the effect of grief on the marriage and children.

  • Permission to Grieve, which helps the family to face the first anniversary of the death.
In addition to this literature, Smith Family Funeral Homes provides a special holiday event each Christmas for all the families in the community. It is hoped that through attending such an event that the community will come together, offering comfort and grow stronger through shared experiences. We refer to this event as the Tree of Remembrance.

Tree of Remembrance

Since 1990 Smith Family Funeral Homes have offered to all the families in the community, not just those they have served, a holiday program to recognize and pay tribute to a family member or friend. Smith Family Funeral Homes provide Christmas ornaments to paint an inscription on in memory of their loved one. The ornament is then displayed on a lighted tree in the funeral home until the designated date of the program. At the conclusion of the special Christmas program, families and friends are encouraged to take their decorated keepsake home with them.
