Axie M. Mailand, age 85, of Alma, MI passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014 in Ithaca, Michigan.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at the Ithaca Community Center, Ithaca, MI. on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Jim Austin officiating. A luncheon will follow.
Axie was born in St. Louis, Michigan on July 1, 1929, the daughter of William and Luella (Stadleberger) Beard. She graduated from Alma High School. Axie married John Mailand on September 29, 1950; John passed away on January 24, 2014. Axie and John spent most of their years living in Riverdale, moving to Alma in 1997.
Axie was a librarian and a board member at the Seville Township Library; she was also a bookkeeper at Cooks Office Supply in Alma. Axie volunteered at the St. Louis Senior Center, and the Gratiot Community Hospital gift shop where she was also an auxiliary member. She enjoyed playing cards with the auxiliary club and family members. Axie was also a volunteer worker for the Seville Township Elections. Axie will be remembered for all of the cakes, quilts, dolls and teddy bears she made for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Axie and John spent many winters in Haines City, Florida.
She is survived by son Ronald and Mary Mailand of Center Sandwhich, NH, daughter Sharon and Donald Zimmerman of Ithaca, Michigan, son James Mailand of Belmont, Michigan, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, son-in-law Daniel Kenney of Ithaca, Michigan, and sister Agnes McNeill of Elwell, Michigan. Axie is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Diane Marie Kenney, and brother Walter Beard.
