Bill E. Mayes age 73 of St. Louis, Michigan died on Sunday morning, October 14, 2007 at his home. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in St. Louis, Michigan on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. Pastor Lillian French will officiate and visitation will be on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 from 2-8 P.M. with the family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel.
Bill was born October 1, 1934 in Hamilton, Maryland the son of Lawrence & Ada (Smith) Mayes. He attended graduated from Redford High School in Detroit with the class of 1953, and Central Michigan University with a mastera�(TM)s degree in Administration of Vocational Education and resided most of his life in Detroit, Mount Pleasant and St. Louis, Michigan.
On June 24, 1962 he married Loraine M. Lampman First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, he had worked for the Gratiot/Isabella R.E.S.D.-he was the director for Career Technical Education. He served in the U.S. Army he was stationed in Korea from 1954-1956. He was President of the School Board, Gratiot Area Chamber serving in various positions, DDA for a lot of years, Greater Gratiot Development Board. He received an Outstanding Educator Award, Spirit of St. Louis Award Winner. He was also inducted into the Michigan Education Hall of Fame. He was also a member of Michigan Council of Vocational Administrators where he received Ralph Wenrich Leadership Award; he was also a member of United Way Board, and he was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa.
Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church in St. Louis, Michigan, and was the chairman of the Administrative Council, and was the financial chairman in finance committee, a member of the Lions Club, Michigan Education for Occupational Education Association, Michigan Association of School Boards. Michigan Council of Vocational Administrators and received the Ralph Weurich Leadership Award.
Survivors include his wife, Loraine Mayes of St. Louis, Michigan, 4 children, Mark Mayes of San Diego, California, Todd Mayes of St. Louis, Michigan, Karin & Michael Baxter of Breckenridge, Michigan. Tomiko Yamashita of Manhattan Beach, California, 2 grandchildren, Vivica Baxter & Alexander Baxter, 1 sister, Vivian & Melvin Pearl of Boyne City, Michigan, several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and 1 nephew; Mitchell Pearl.
Memorial may be made to First United Methodist Church or Gratiot County Community Foundation for the Mayes Fund.
