Clifford John McQuiston age 93 of Chapin Township, Michigan died Sunday, March 5, 2006 at St. Cloud Regional Medical Center St. Cloud, Florida.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Dr. George Somers and Rev. Gary Hawes will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2006 from 6-8 P.M. and Friday, March 10, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Memorial can be made to Chapin United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
Clifford was born in Chapin Township, Michigan on October 20, 1912 the son of John E. and Anna ( Schoman ) McQuiston. Clifford married Betty ( Somers ) Glover in January 1956. He was a farmer. He retired after 87 years of operating the 139-year-old McQuiston Family Centennial Farm in Chapin Township of Saginaw County after graduating from the McQuiston Schoolhouse at the old-age of 12. Clifford also worked as a Welder Technician in Ashley Industrial Plant and was employed later at the Carland Elevator for 8 years. Clifford held a bank of many stories from both his father's past and his long life spanning from his boyhood years, the woods and hunting, toiling the soil by driving teams of horses, the Great Depression, the Weather Storms of his past, the annual operation of a beaner and thrashing machine throughtout the community, barn raisings, silo filling, his single life of 43 years, and all the unique and peculiar characteristics of his friends and neighbors with whom he grew up and had had past experiences. Clifford enjoyed the old western movies namely Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey, John Wayne, and Sons of the Pioneers, folklore stories, the various shows appearing in town, wrestling matches, ice skating, roller skating, and dance hall events. Clifford attended Chapin United Methodist Church and was on the Chapin Township Board-of-Review for approximately 12 years.
He is survived by his wife Betty McQuiston of Brant, Michigan, daughter Rebecca Faye & Al Bannerman, daughter Karen Sue Louchart and fiance Larry Brooks, son Clifford James & Joyce McQuiston, daughter Joleen Ann McQuiston, daughter Marilou Kay Ward, daughter Katrina Marie & Archie Johnson, son Gerald Roger McQuiston, 19 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Paul E. Jones, brother & sister-in-law George & Joyce Somers. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Carl E. and sister-in-law Isabel McQuiston.
