Donald Walter Gilbert, a man of faith, intellect, and integrity, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025. He was born on April 1, 1957 at Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah, the son of Clyde and JoAnn (Anderson) Gilbert. Don lived a life filled with faith, dedication, and quiet determination.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with burial at Fairfield Township Cemetery.
Don graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School in 1975, where his thoughtful nature and sharp intellect earned him the title of "Most Serious" in his class. A passionate participant in the drama club and astronomy club, he exceeded in bringing creativity and curiosity to all his pursuits.
After high school, Don joined the Navy in 1975, serving his country with pride before being honorably discharged due to medical reasons almost 2 years later. Seeking to deepen his faith and knowledge, Don attended Great Lakes Bible College in Lansing, Michigan where he majored in language and minored in ministry. His dedication earned him awards for both preaching and language studies.
Don later transitioned from ministry to manufacturing where he discovered a surprising and fulfilling career, leaving him time to write. A natural writer, Don expressed his creativity through fiction, humorously declaring his novels unfit for public view, yet they remain a testament to his boundless imagination.
Don shared his thoughts and reflections through his blog, The Educated Shoprat, offering wisdom, humility, and insight to his readers. His words revealed a man who was deeply grounded in his faith and ever curious about the world around him.
Above all, Don was a devoted son, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor whose life was guided by his Christian values. He will be remembered for his steadfast faith, dry humor, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
He is survived by his brother Bruce Gilbert, nephews: Benjamin (Courtney), Brandon (Mika), and David; nieces: Rachal, Allison (Shea), Cortney (Francis), and Nicole, and many great-nephews and nieces who will continue to honor his legacy. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Skip "Clyde Jr." and Roger.
As we grieve his passing, we rejoice in the assurance that Don is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, having completed a life well-lived and a race well-run.
