Donna B. Besko age 89 of St. Johns, MI died Wednesday, November 7, 2007 in St. Johns, MI.
Memorial Services will be held at Grove Bible Church, St. Johns, MI on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 2:00 PM. Pastor Robert Prange will officiate.
Donna was born in Okemos, Michigan on August 8, 1918 the daughter of Bernard and Bernice ( Spaulding ) Scheidt. She resided most of her life in the Ovid and St. Johns areas and graduated from South Haven High School with the class of 1936. Donna married Henry Besko on August 7, 1959 in Laingsburg, MI. Donna was the Postmaster at the Ovid Post Office for many years. Prior to being the Postmaster, she was the first woman city carrier in the United States. Donna also worked as a clerk and rural carrier. She enjoyed bowling, spending time at Lake City, and for many years played softball at Lake Odessa. One of her great loves was spending time with her grandchildren, all 100. Donna was a member of Grove Bible Church, St. Johns, MI as well as the National League of Postmasters and was a very active supporter of the Democratic Party.
She is survived by her husband Henry Bekso of St. Johns, MI, 3 sons; Monte & Dorie Sauers of Lake Odessa, Dennis and Barbara Sauers of Woodland, MI, Dirk and Kay Bekso of St. Johns, MI, 2 daughters; Toby and Bill Hanson of Wayland, MI, Sonya and Mark Latz of Elsie, MI, 2 step-daughters; Rita Sodman of Ovid, MI, Teala and John Moon of St. Johns, MI, step-daughter-in-law Fran Besko of Holt, MI, 4 sisters; Ardene and Vance Lackey, Marion McVay, Phyllis Lackey, Marvel Bessemer, Peggy and Jim Ryder, 1 brother: Roger and Beverly Scheidt, 28 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, and 16 great great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, first husband Paul Sauers, two brothers, two sisters, and one step-son, Bill Bekso.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice or to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor Memorial. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.
