Doris Darling

Doris M. (Pickering) Darling, age 86, of Ovid, MI passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, July 4th, after a long journey through Alzheimer's. Doris was a vibrant resident of Ovid for nearly 65 years and an active member of the community, serving her church (United Methodist), service organizations (Acme Society) and the village library for many years.

She will be greatly missed by her devoted husband Harvey, her three children and their spouses, Ronald Darling (Terry), Pamela Tyner (Joseph) and Rosemary Baese (Kirk), her grandchildren, Ryan Baese, Nicholas Darling, Breanna Colville, and Kathryn Tyner, as well as her great-grandchildren, Jack Baese and Lucy Darling. Also survived by her two brothers, James Pickering (Irma) of Grand Blanc, MI and John Pickering (Harriet) of Mobile, AL.

Doris was born January 25, 1924 to English immigrants, John and Kate Pickering in Flint, MI where her father worked for General Motors in freight logistics. She worked at General Motors Institute as a secretary and lived with her parents through WWII. There, she kept up a lively and faithful correspondence with Harvey during his military service in the Pacific. She moved to Ovid when they married in 1947 and Harvey returned to the family business, Darling's Hardware. They shared their home on Main Street throughout their 63 year marriage.

Her family remembers her terrific sense of humor, her sense of adventure, and her great love of art, literature, children, and the beauty of the natural world.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 6th, from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at the Houghton Chapel, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid. If unable to attend, go to www.lifestorynet.com/memories/60277 to sign the on-line guest book and view a celebration of her life.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 7, at 10:00 am at the United Church of Ovid, 131 W. Front St., Ovid. Burial will follow at Fairfield Cemetery, Carland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ovid-Elsie Community Fund in memory of Doris.
