Dorothy Naomi Mitchell, known affectionately as Dort, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2023, at the age of 87, under the loving care of Frankfort Pines Assisted Living in Frankfort, Michigan. She was born on October 4, 1936, in Rogers City, Michigan, to the late Ray W. and Lydia (Simon) Peters.
Dort was a strong matriarch, caring sister, loyal friend, patient teacher, and faithful Christian, who had a creative spirit and wonderful sense of humor. Her optimistic and tenacious nature inspired all those around her. She was deeply devoted to her family and took great pride in being a loving wife and mother and maintaining an inviting home where all were welcome. Dorothy's warmth and nurturing nature extended beyond her immediate family, as she served as a child care provider and youth group leader. Her love for animals was apparent by the numerous family pets she cherished over the years, and it inspired her enjoyment in bird watching and Animal Planet later in life.
She is survived by her four children: Christopher Jon Mitchell (Terry), Sheila Ann "Sam" Cagle (Craig), Lisa Lynne Carpenter (Rich), and Scott George Mitchell (Susan); grandchildren: Alyssa, Christopher (Breanna), Keith, Sarah, Corbin, Cole, and Jonah; and great-grandchildren Christopher and Maddox. She is also survived by siblings: Keith Peters (Mary), Richard Peters, Gayle Green (Dave), and Barbara Stuckey; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy also leaves behind several special grand-dogs who brought joy to her life. Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, John Gary Mitchell. Their love and partnership were truly remarkable and served as an inspiration to all who knew them. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Joyce Peters, sister-in-law Mary Jean Peters, and brother-in-law Bill Stuckey.
The legacy of Dorothy's love, strength, and unwavering support will forever be cherished by her family and friends. Dort's memory will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Dort's life and honor her memory.
