Elon Hufnagel

Elon J. Hufnagel, age 92, of St. Johns, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at home.

Elon was born on June 22, 1929 the oldest of nine children to Roman and Dolores (Droste) Hufnagel.  He married Wanda Eaton on September 9, 1950.  They raised 7 children and celebrated 65 years together before she passed in 2015.

He worked at Sealed Power Corporation for 44 years, starting at the age of 18, and continuing until he retired at the age of 62.  He was also a volunteer firefighter for the City of St. Johns.  He loved seeing his children and grandchildren.  He liked playing golf and euchre.  He liked his hot food, VERY HOT and his cold food ICY COLD!

He is survived by his 7 children: Denise (Michael) Dault, Val (Lisa) Hufnagel, Marc (Ann) Hufnagel, Pam (Denny) Baese, Stacie (Brian) Ocenasek, Elon (Michelle) Hufnagel, Jr., and Dean (Lori) Hufnagel; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his special friend Millie, his sister Karen Schafer, his brothers: Carl (Joan), Jerry (Diane), Larry (Gail), and Frank; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother John, two sisters: Ann Pahl and Janice Parker, and one granddaughter Alicia Hufnagel.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI, at a later date.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 from 2-8 p.m. with the family present from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI.  A Vigil will be prayed on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
