Frank Wassa, age 81, of Bannister, Michigan died Friday, December 31st, 2010 at Masonic Pathways in Alma, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Wednesday, January 5th at 11:00 A.M. Tom Bradley will officiate. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel.

Frank was born in Bannister, Michigan on August 21, 1929, the son of Joseph and Pauline (Dunay) Wassa. Frank attended a one room school house through the 8th grade, leaving school to work on the family farm. Frank continued farming until retiring in 2008. Frank was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. During deer season he traveled to the upper peninsula to hunt with his brothers and nephews; a tradition started by his father. He also enjoyed listening to Czech/Slovak music and practicing the language with family and friends. A loving and caring son, he cared for his parents during their declining health allowing them to live at home. A generous man, he was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge in Bannister, MI.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jim, and sister in law Helen Wassa. He is survived by his 2 brothers Albert Wassa of Bannister, MI;
Stanley and Millie Wassa of St. Johns, MI; sister Mary Jane and James McNutt of Midland, MI; and sister in law Mary Jane (James) Wassa of Ovid, MI. He is also survived by nephews Jack and Joyce Wassa of Beulah, MI; Joseph Wassa and fiancée Mary Newman; Thomas and Tina Wassa of Fairgrove, MI; Steven Wassa and friend Sheryl of St. Johns, MI; Carol and Ralph Nixon of Bannister; Sherry Huss of Ovid, MI; Kelly and Ron Berghorst of Gladwin, MI; Laura and Dale Foster of Midland, MI; Karen and Anthony Flores of Lansing, MI; and Kathleen and Barry Hart of Palo Alto, CA. He is also survived by many great nephews and nieces, and great great nephews and nieces.
