George Samuel (Sam) Dunbar was born in Midland, Michigan on January 29, 1951 to George and Lucille (Owens) Dunbar. He graduated from Saint Louis High School in Saint Louis Michigan in 1969 and went on to major in English Education at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana where he met and married Mary Jane Hofacker in 1971. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973 and moved to Seymour, Indiana where he pastored the Seymour First Church of God for ten years. During this time, he also earned his Master of Arts degree from the Anderson University School of Theology (1980).
Following a call to ministry on the West Coast, Sam pastored the Hoodview Church of God in Woodburn Oregon for six years. He then became the State Coordinator for the Churches of God in Oregon and Southwest Washington, a position he filled for 11 years. In 2000, he answered the call to pastor his home church, Saint Louis First Church of God, in Saint Louis, Michigan. Taking on a two-point charge in 2008, Sam began serving North Bradley Church of God as well.
Sam was a lifelong servant of the Church of God, preaching and teaching in camp meetings, conferences and classes in various states and countries, including India, Japan and Kenya. He was a member of the Woodburn Kiwanis from 1984-1992 and served as a Warner Pacific College Trustee from 1993-2008. He also served as chairman of the Woodburn School Board and as an adjunct faculty member at Warner Pacific College. He enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, traveling, cooking, reading history books and spending time with his family.
Sam is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary (Hofacker) Dunbar, and his children: Nathan and Maryann (McDonald) Dunbar of Woodburn, Oregon; Jenny and Bobby Mihsill of Anderson, Indiana; and Benjamin Dunbar of Saint Louis, Michigan. He is also survived by his beloved granddaughter, Marybeth Grace Dunbar; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Shawn and Kelley Dunbar of Grand Rapids and Richard Dunbar of Saint Louis; two aunts and uncles, Ralph (Skip) and Ardeth (Owens) Marsh, and Hubert and Gloria Dunbar; two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kevin Dunbar.
Funeral Services will be held at the Saint Louis Church of God Campgrounds 8489 North Bagley Road, in Saint Louis, Michigan at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 27, 2010 with Dr. Bill Jones officiating. Visitation will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 6-8 PM and on Sunday, September 26, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.
