George Aldon Harris age 86 of Durand, Michigan, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at Durand Convalescent Manor in Durand, Michigan.
Funeral services will held on Friday, October 21, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna, Michigan. Burial will take place at Pine Tree Cemetery, Corunna, Michigan. Pastor Dean Rhine will officiate and visitation will be Wednesday 6-8 P.M. and Thursday from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel.
George Aldon Harris was born on May 27, 1919 in Cary, Ohio the son of Henry J. and Emma (Bame) Harris. George along with his eight brothers and sisters lived in Corunna and the Carland area as kids. Georgea�(TM)s parents endeavored the Great Depression when the children were growing up. George married Elaine Francis Bonnin on October 6, 1940. He met her through his sister Maxine. They all enjoyed going to the Saturday night dances at Edgewood Gardens (now GiGia�(TM)s).
In 1944 George was drafted into the United States Navy during World War II. He served aboard the U.S.S. L114 (Navy Landing craft) deployed during the invasion of Okinawa. He also spent time in the Philippines, Japan, China and Hawaii; receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
George returned safely home to Elaine in January to spend the rest of their lives together raising their family and enjoying each othera�(TM)s company. Their favorite past time was going to their cabin at McKinley. His parents and four of his brothers and sisters also had a place there.
George worked at Auto Lite in Owosso, Saginaw Steering Gear, Buick and retiring from Simplicity Engineering in Durand in 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughter Norma Jean and husband Ron Chrzan, son Robert Aldon Harris, and friend Dennis Wiengartz, sister Maxine and husband John Burwell of Las Vegas. Sister in-laws, Katie Harris of Clare, Beth Bonnin of Owosso, Geri and husband Don Elliott of Owosso, brother in-law Harold Tobey of Ovid, two grandsons, Matthew Aldon and wife Amy Chrzan, Michael Aaron and wife Melissa Chrzan, two great-granddaughters, Makayla Paige and Makenna Taylor Chrzan and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Alberta Lanham, Jean Kinney, Margaret Tobey, brothers, Woodrow (Bud) of Idaho, C.W. (Mose) and Ed both of Corunna and Donnell of Clare, MI.
