George House

George Edward House age 91 passed away peacefully April 29, 2005 at Schnepp Health Care Facility in St. Louis, Michigan.
Born January 22, 1914, George was one of six children born to Edward and Hilda ( Carlson ) House, in Onaway, Michigan.
On June 18, 1938, he married Caroline Wells of Riverdale, residing there until moving to Alma in 1993.
During their 66 years together they raised three children, Kent (Margo) House of Alma, Harold House of Alma, and Deana (Ken) Korpon of Arizona. They were blessed with 5 grandchildren, Christine (John) Schultz, Kent Jr. (Jill) House, Shannan (Bill) Lindsey, Carla (Tim) Gustavison, and John (Tasha) Waters and 7 great grandchildren, Kent House III, Kenya House, Timmy & Dalelynn Gustavison, Morgan & Jacob Lindsey and Andrew Schultz.
George was a pipefitter by trade, holding a Supervisory position for 37 years beginning with Roosevelt Refinery in Mt. Pleasant, then to Mid-West Refinery, which later became Leonard Refinery, retiring from Total Refinery in 1976. For several years following retirement, George continued to work, during the summer months, at Total, supervising the college students.
George & Connie also owned and operated the Riverdale Grocery for several years during the late 1950a(TM)s into the early 1960a(TM)s.
Georgea(TM)s great passion was baseball. When employed by Roosevelt Refinery he was catcher for their team and had, at one time, tried out for professional baseball.
He was affectionately called "Pa" by all the town kids, and his greatest past time was spending time in "the barn" tinkering with his vast collection of "stuff". Pa was never known to throw anything away a" you never knew when you might need it! He loved deer hunting with the boys and always looked forward to opening day and preparing the "hunting breakfast".
He was a member of the past Riverdale Methodist Church, the Riverdale A.C.T. group and the Alma Elks Lodge #1400.
At Georgea(TM)s request, cremation has taken place with arrangements being handled by Smith Family Funeral Homes, 117 North East Street, St. Louis, Michigan 48880. There will be no services. Anyone wishing to remember George may consider a donation to the Riverdale Library, the Riverdale A.C.T. group or the charity of onea(TM)s choice. Online condolences can be sent to www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com.
Additional family members surviving George are his sisters Hilda Elsea of Alma and Kay Nelson of Grand Rapids, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
George was preceded in death by a son James, brothers, Terry, Emerson, and Dan and daughter-in-law, Carolyn.
The family would like to extend "special thanks" to each and every one of the wonderful girls at Schneppa(TM)s for the unending attention, love, hugs, kisses, and support given to all of us during Georgea(TM)s six year stay there. Thank you, also, to the girls from hospice for their care and support these past couple of weeks and finally, another special Thank You to George Showers for his prayers and guidance. You will always have a special place in our hearts.
