Gerald J. "Jerry" Schafer, age 87, of Hubbardston, MI died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Lansing, MI.

Memorial Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at West Side Cemetery on Borden Road in Hubbardston, MI with Pastoral Director-Nancy Woodcock presiding.

Gerald was born in Clinton County, Michigan on April 7, 1924, the son of Henry and Veronica (Bierstetel) Schafer. Gerald married Harriet F. Holbrook on April 15, 1948 and she preceded him in death on February 2, 1982. Jerry served his country in the US Army during WWII. He owned and operated Schafer Sand and Gravel for many years. Jerry also enjoyed farming and just being with people.

He is survived by 2 sons Bob and Pat Schafer of Holt, MI, Steve and Connie Schafer of Hubbardston, MI, daughter Loretta and Russ Shirey of Hubbardston, MI, 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, sister Mary Ann Kramer of Pewamo, MI, brother Tom and Helen Schafer of St. Johns, MI, and sister Rita Gesselman and Herm Thomas of Carson City, MI. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers; Paul and Ben Schafer and one sister Agnes Bradbury.
