Geraldine "Gerry" Houck

Geraldine "Gerry" (Reid) Houck age 93 of Alma, MI passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at Warwick Living Center, Alma, MI.

Gerry was born on Christmas Day 1922 in Clifford, Michigan, the youngest of eight children born to Hugh and Carrie Reid.

Gerry met her husband Edward at God's Bible School in Owosso. They were married on July 26, 1941.  Their first years were spent on a farm near West Branch where their four children were born; Marcia, Carolyn, Larry, and Harley.  She also served alongside Ed for several years while he was a pastor.

Gerry was born before computers were even thought of, but was intrigued by technology and gadgets. After being widowed at age 70, she drove to a nearby town for typing lessons so she could get a computer.  She used her computer to make her own greeting cards for many years. She was still using Facebook at age 93! Her grandchildren remember birthday cakes she baked for them and her famous graham cracker fluff.  We will always treasure these memories!

One year, when her family was grown, she received a birthday cake on Christmas Day.  She had tears in her eyes and told us she had never had a birthday cake.  We were stunned!  She has never missed a birthday since without receiving a least one cake.

After moving to assisted living at the age of 92, Gerry excelled at Ladder Golf and was especially delighted at seeing herself playing on video.

Gerry was a quiet lady.  Her faith was a very important part of her life.  Her Bible was worn out from daily reading.  She was never judgmental; this made her all the more loving.  At a recent Bible study group, the activities director asked if anyone could spell "Nebuchadnezzar."  His eyebrows went up as Mom clearly spelled the king's name correctly.

Many of her later years were much more pleasant because of her dear friend and helper, Nancy, who spent many hours visiting, reading to her and taking her to church and various church activities.

Gerry is survived by her children; Marcia (Dana) and Larry Nicholson of Freeland, MI, Larry and Suellen Houck of Vestaburg, MI, and Harley and Arla Houck of Kearney, NE, 17 grandchildren, and many great and great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Carolyn.

A celebration of Gerry's life and faith will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 21, 2016 at the St. Louis Holiness Church with Pastor Matthew Smart officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
