Guadalupe "Lupe" Ortiz, age 85, of Elsie, MI, passed away Friday, January 29, 2021, at Memorial Healthcare, Owosso, MI. After a courageous battle with breast cancer, she unfortunately succumbed to COVID-19.
A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI, at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 5, 2021, with Rev. Fr. Robert C. Bacik officiating. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021 from 3-7 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI. Rosary will be prayed on Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Those attending visitation are asked to follow covid guidelines, wear a mask and social distance. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021 from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the private funeral mass at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI. Those who are not able to attend the funeral mass are welcome to watch the service as it's live streamed on Smith Family Funeral Homes Facebook Page. The family will plan a celebration of Lupe's life at a later date when it is safe to gather.
Guadalupe was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 12, 1935, the daughter of Juanita (Villarreal) Quintela. Lupe married Frank Roy Ortiz on September 25, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Lansing, MI; He passed away on October 6, 2006.
Lupe enjoyed water aerobics, traveling and cruises. She was a member of the Red Hats Society and volunteered at the Elsie Food Bank. Lupe was a devout catholic who prayed the rosary daily. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI. She fulfilled her husband's dying wish and bought the red Cadillac she always wanted.
Anyone who knew Lupe knows she was full of life, spry and sharp minded an 85 year old full of energy, always up for adventure. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a kind loving soul who will be greatly missed by all.
She is survived by her children: Yvonne and Randy Cross of Owosso, MI, Cynthia and Vern Foster of Lansing, MI, Jane and Greg Kellogg of Hampstead, NC, Yolanda and Frank Chapko of Bannister, MI, Lydia and Ken Vanderveen-Syrba of Rockford, MI, Frank Jr. and Cindy Ortiz of Rockford, MI, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Juanita and Albert Trujillo of Bannister, MI, and brothers: Phillip and Mary Quintela of Lansing, MI, and Gilbert and Esther Quintela of San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank Oritz, brother Zenon Quintela, infant granddaughter Jessica Ann Ortiz, infant great-grandson Silas Michael Chapko.
