Hazel Harriet Grinnell, age 77, of Ovid, MI passed away Friday, August 7, 2015 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Msgr. George Michalek as Celebrant. Burial will follow at North Star Cemetery, North Star, MI. Visitation will be held on Sunday August 9, 2015 from 1:00-7:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI and 1 hour prior to Mass at the Church.
Hazel was born in Ashley, Michigan on April 29, 1938, the daughter of Walter and Lillian (Powelson) Ackels. She graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1956. She resided most of her life in Ovid. Hazel and Dick were married on June 8, 1968.
Hazel was a past president and Providence Director for the National Council of Catholic Women for the State of Michigan. She was an avid University of Michigan fan and held season football tickets for 20 years. Hazel was the office manager for Security Alarm Systems for many years. She was active with the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Hazel served as a Eucharistic Minister for Holy Family Catholic Church and was an active member at Church functions. Hazel and her husband were selected to be Grand Marshals in this year's Carriage Days. She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Hazel will be remembered for her generosity and giving spirit.
She is survived by her husband Dick Grinnell of Ovid, MI; 3 sons; Walter and Maureen Ackels of St. Louis, Missouri, Paul Ackels of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Patrick Ackels & Tracy Huss of Ovid, MI, step son Paul Grinnell & Denise Frye of Ovid, MI, 2 step daughters; Paullett and Ron VanLake of Bannister, MI, Penny Grinnell of Ovid, MI, 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers; Roger and Bobbi Ackels of Houston, TX, Roneil and Jorja Ackels of Owosso, MI. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents Walter Ackels and Lillian Conger, her daughter Philis (Ackels) Bukovcik, step-son John Grinnell and 2 brothers; Richard Ackels and Rodrick Ackels.
