Helen Margaret Gavenda age 91 of Ashley, Michigan died on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Burcham Hills Care Center, Okemos, Michigan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday, 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel. A Rosary will be prayed on Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery; Gratiot County, Michigan, Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate.
Helen was born on June 28, 1916 in West Virginia the daughter of John & Mary ( McKoskey) Slavik and resided most of her life in the Ashley area. She married Andrew Gavenda on June 13, 1933 in Bannister, Michigan, Andrew died April 21, 1971. She had worked with her husband on their farm in Gratiot County, and for the Ashley Public Schools, had worked as a care giver at the County Farm in Ithaca and Browna�(TM)s Nursing Home, and retired from Carson City Hospital.
Helen was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church, and the Altar Society, ZCBJ Lodge #225, East Washington Extension Club, and was a member of the Carson City Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and loved to cooking & baking, sewing, crocheting and embroidering. She was a very kind and caring person who enjoyed and loved caring for of all of her grandchildren and when she was in her 80a�(TM)s she spent time taking care of Devon & Brianna her great grandchildren.
Survivors include her 3 daughters, Lillian Batterson of Lansing, Michigan, Helen & Larry Kerr of Williamston, Michigan, Janet & Don Cook of Ashley, Michigan, 1 son, Ronald & Shirley Gavenda of
Freeland, Michigan, 11 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 1 brother
John & Helen Slavik of Otisville, Michigan, She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Andrew, 2 sisters Victoria Lucas & Pauline Davidson, 3 brothers, Walter, Frank, Peter Slavik.
