Helen Ellanore Post of Greenbush Township died February 13, 2009 at the age of 100. She was born on September 10, 1908 in Greenbush Township, Clinton County, MI. Helen was preceded in death by her father, Edgar Daniel Post, and mother, Katherine Serena (Goddard) Post, her sister, Katherine Elizabeth Ward, and her brothers, William Earl Post, Frederick Burton Post, Richard Goddard Post, Miron Edward Post, and his son Robert Miron Post, and grandson, William Michael Post.
She is survived by her nieces Katherine Joan Smith who resides in FL, Nancy Jane Knecht and Suzanne Irene Webb both residing in the Flint area and a nephew, Howard Frederick Ward of Franklin, OH and many children of her nieces and nephew.
Helen was a life long resident of Greenbush Township and member of the Greenbush Methodist Church and the Clinton County Teacher Association. She attended the Sherwood Elementary and graduated from St. Johns High School in 1926. Helen always wanted to be a teacher, so she attended the Clinton County Normal School for Teachers. Upon graduation, she began her teaching career at the Eureka Elementary School. After two years, she enrolled at Mt. Pleasant College (now Central Michigan University) and received a Life Teaching Certificate, along with her degree in Education. Helen then taught second grade in Ionia from 1931 to 1937. She began teaching all eight grades at the French School in 1938 in Greenbush Township. Helen left teaching to take care of her ill mother for five years. In 1955 Helen returned to teaching at the Paige School. In 1961 Earl Lancaster, the superintendent of schools for Clinton County, asked her to develop a Special Education Program in St. Johns to serve all schools in Clinton County. Helen accepted the challenge, took more classes at CMU and organized the program. From 1961 until her retirement in 1970, she taught students in special education. Her teaching career spanned 33 years in the classroom. Helen remained very active in her church and with the Clinton County Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Monday, February 16, 2009 at Greenbush United Methodist Church at the corner of Scott and Marshall Roads in Greenbush Township with Pastor Kathy Leydorf officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Greenbush United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Eureka Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday February 15, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Osgood Funeral Home.
