Helen Vlcek

Helen C. Vlcek, age 98, of Grand Rapids, MI formerly of Elsie, MI, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2015 at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, Michigan on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 10:30 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Raymond Urbanek officiating. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI. Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Helen was born in Elsie, Michigan on August 4, 1916, the daughter of Frank and Lena (Horak) Slovacek. She graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School with the class of 1933. On August 31, 1935 she married Frank Vlcek at St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Bannister, Michigan; Frank died on October 9, 1993.

Helen worked at the Elsie Sun (Advertiser) Newspaper for 40 years. She drove for Clinton County Meals on Wheels and enjoyed sewing and crossword puzzles. She was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge 225 in Bannister and a former Mother of the Year at the lodge. She resided most of her life in the Elsie area. Helen was a Red Cross volunteer and taught CCD at St. Cyril's Catholic Church for many years. Helen attended St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, MI and Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI.

She is survived by 4 daughters; Patricia Latz, Carolyn and Larry Thornton, Mary Helene and Phillip Fizzell, Anne and Sue Vlcek-Hood, 1 son Thomas and Susan Vlcek, 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her parents, husband Frank, great grandson Jacob McIntyre, 1 sister Mary Horak, and 1 brother Frank.
