Herbert E. Baxter age 75 of St. Louis, Michigan died Monday, April 21, 2008 at Gratiot Medical Center, Alma, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel St. Louis, MI on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 1:00 PM. Rev. Stephen Shook will officiate with burial at Chapel Garden Cemetery Seville Township, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.and Thursday, April 24, 2008 from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at 1:00 P.M.

Herbert was born in Alma, Michigan on May 2, 1932 the son of Elbert and Lillian ( Harrison ) Baxter. He resided most of his life in St. Louis, Michigan and graduated from Alma High School with the class of 1951. Herbert married Marie D. Burnham on June 18, 1955 in St. Louis, Michigan. Herbert retired from Crippen Manufacturing in 2006. He was also a farmer and had worked for Detroiter Mobile Homes and Gratiot County Road Commision. Herbert was an avid wood carver, fisherman, hunter and trapper. He also enjoyed writing poems and music and telling stories. He was also a published poet. Herbert was a past 4-H Leader, member of several Trappers Associations, and a South Michigan Hall of Fame Trapper. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA and the a member of the Gratiot Carvers Club.

He is survived by his wife Marie Baxter of St. Louis, MI, 3 children Darrel Baxter of St. Louis, MI, Dee Baxter of St. Louis, MI, Darlene Campbell of St. Louis, MI, 4 grandchildren; Benjamin & Jaime Baxter of St. Louis, MI, Bridget & Andrew Olsen of Battle Creek, MI, Andrew Campbell of St. Louis, MI, Amber Campbell of St. Louis, MI, 3 great grandchildren; Kayla, Hailey, & Emily Baxter, 2 brothers; Jess & Delores Baxter of Alma, MI, Laurel & Eleanor Baxter of Florida, and 1 sister Roberta & James Caris of Wyoming, MI. He is predeceased by his parents, 2 sisters Iris Austin, Catherine Perry and 1 brother Walter Baxter.

Memorials may be made to the family. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel.
