Janet M. Bissell, age 74, of Shepherd, MI passed away Monday, August 20, 2012 at Mid-Michigan Medical Center - Gratiot, Alma, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Louis Chapel St. Louis, MI on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 and Wednesday, August 22, 2012 from 2-8 PM with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
Janet was born in St. Louis, Michigan on September 7, 1937, the daughter of Byron and Cecilia (Roberts) Travis. Janet resided most of her life in Shepherd, MI and was a graduate of Shepherd High. Janet married Dean Bissell on May 9, 1959 in Shepherd, MI at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
Janet found joy in caring for her family, especially baking and cooking for her family and friends. Janet and Dean farmed together for many years. She would bring food out to the fields for the boys to enjoy. Her children & grandchildren were a very important part of her life. As a young child she grew up on a family farm where she was active in 4-H. Janet was baptized Catholic and was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church of Shepherd. Janet also liked to crochet.
She is survived by her husband Dean Bissell of Shepherd, MI, son Timothy and Sara Bissell of St. Louis, MI, daughter Carmen and Scott Bajena of St. Louis, MI, daughter Kimberly and Jake Davidson of St. Louis, MI, son Robert Bissell of St. Louis, MI, son Thomas and Wendy Bissell of St. Louis, MI, son Lee Burk of St. Louis, MI, 13 grandchildren; Adam Bissell, Amber Bissell, Alex Greenup, Megan Greenup, Madeline Greenup, Amanda Bajena, Megan Bajena, Brayden Bajena, Brittini Davidson, Kenzie Davidson, Jordan Bissell and Sheila Saurman; 1 great-grandchild Carter Byrne, brother John and Rosemary Travis of Shepherd, MI, brother Joe and Judy Travis of Shepherd, MI, sister Mary Statler of Pace, FL, sister Glorianne and Jim Leasher of Breckenridge, MI, brother Pat and Evelyn Travis of Shepherd, MI, long time family member Dana Saurman, and several nieces & nephews. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Sarah Bajena; daughter-in-law Shannan Bissell, brother Richard "Dick" Travis, and brother-in-law William Statler.
