Joan Smith

Joan E. Smith, age 92 died, August 10, 2011. Born June 21, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Geller) George. She worked as a secretary for the Department of Social Services in Ionia and Clinton County and was also a farmer. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Patricia Guild of the Altar Society. Joan married Stanley H. Smith, November 13, 1943 and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2000.

Joan is survived by three daughters, Kay (Gil) Sparks of Washington, Patricia Thelen of Mt. Pleasant, and Jeanne (Carl) Murray of Ashley, three grandsons, Russ Sparks of California, Chris Sparks of Idaho and Andy Murray of Ashley, two granddaughters, Jenn Thelen of Alaska and Becky Arbic of Pickford, four great grandchildren, Joanne Arbic, Evan Arbic, Elias Arbic and Elizabeth Murray. In addition to her husband, Joan was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Joseph George, Roy Goerge and Leo George, sisters, Katherine Frechen, Alice Slowenski and Esther George.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am Tuesday, August 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Fred Thelen presiding. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 pm Monday at The Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Clinton Hospital or the Clinton County Senior Center. The family was served by The Osgood Funeral Homes.
