Joan J. (Walta) Theriac

    Joan J. Theriac, age 86, of Ovid, MI, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024.

     Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI, at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, January 29, 2024. Burial will follow the service at Fairfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service.

     Joan was born in New Lothrop, MI on June 21, 1937, the daughter of Dan and Anna (Hnilca) Walta. She married Richard Joseph Theriac of Vincennes, Indiana in 1957.   Joan met Richard at the Matthews Building in Owosso, MI where she worked for the credit bureau as he worked in an insurance agency. Their wedding portrait was photographed by acclaimed Owosso artist Felix O. Schlag, who was commissioned to design the Jefferson nickel in 1938.  Joan spent her married life in Owosso as well as in Vincennes, IN.

      Joan was a founding member of the Ovid Historical Society, and an active member of that group through the 1990s.   She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, including many family trips with her grandsons.   Joan was fond of the many dogs that she owned or cared for over the years.

    Joan is survived by her four children: Terry Ann (Mark), Andrew Adam (Nancy), Lisa Michele, Gerad Stephen; and her loving grandsons: Alex Stephen Wartinger and Wyatt John Wartinger. Joan is also survived by her sister Stephanie's three children; Other close family include Thomas (Linh) White, Pamela (James) Ellsworth and their children.  Joan was preceded in death by her parents, step-father Stephen Kadera, her children's father Richard, infant son Richard Joseph, Jr., and dear sister Stephanie Litomisky.
