John Leroy "Jack" Austin age 82, of St. Louis, MI formerly of Elwell, MI died Friday, October 17, 2008 at Schnepp Health Care Center
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Louis Chapel St. Louis, MI on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Lee Rhodes will officiate. Burial will be held at Jasper Township Cemetery, Jasper, MI. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 6-8 P.M. and Monday, October 20, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Louis Chapel St. Louis, MI. An Elks Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Jack was born in Pontiac, Michigan on February 27, 1926, the son of Alfred and Lucy (Hunt) Austin. Jack married Shirley Young on December 21, 1946 at Strickland Baptist Church. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He resided most of his life in Elwell. Jack was a life member of the Alma VFW, and a member of the Alma Elks Lodge #1400. Jack worked at Michigan Chemical until its closing and then he worked at Precision Plastics in Ithaca until his retirement in 1987. Jack loved to deer hunt and many other outdoor activities. He loved to clean and tinker in his pole barn.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Austin of St. Louis, MI, 2 daughters; Kay and John Criswell of St. Louis, MI, Carol and Chip Aldrich of St. Louis, MI, 3 grandchildren; Scott and Robbin Ewer of Howard City, MI, Teresa and Ed Ward of St. Louis, MI, Jon and Jennifer Aldrich of St. Louis, MI, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchildren and brother Ira and Dorothy Austin of Alma, MI. He was predeceased by his parents, a granddaughter Jody Aldrich Aikens, and 3 brothers Leon, Lawrence, and Junior.
