John Besant

John Richard Besant age 73 of Oscoda, MI formerly of Ovid, MI and native of Flint died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at his home.

In celebration of his life, services will be held at at Smith Family Funeral Homes Jennings-Lyons Chapel Owosso, MI on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Kenneth Herbruck will officiate. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Jennings-Lyons Chapel.

John was born in Flint, Michigan on March 1, 1935, the son of Lyle and Hazel Irene (Ingrahm) Besant. He graduated from St. Michael's in Flint. John married Rose Kelley on July 31, 1981 in Flint, MI. John served his country in the U.S. Marines. He worked as a tool & dye maker for GM working at the Fischer Body Plant and retiring from Oldsmobile after 47 years of service. John loved the outdoors, including; camping, and fishing and he retired near Lake Huron where he could watch the sun rise over the lake. John's family was very important to him. He leaves behind many friendships formed while an employee at General Motors and new friends from the Oscoda area. John was a member of the American Legion and the VFW in Oscoda. He attended the Owosso Assembly of God.

He is survived by his wife Rose Besant of Oscoda, MI, daughter Theresa and Robert Petko of East Grand Rapids, MI, son Michael and Kenda Besant of Flushing, MI, daughter Sheila Farley of Peoria, IL, daughter Ginny Besant of St. Johns, MI, step daughter Jill and Will Welton of St. Johns, MI, step son Paul and Wendy Hazen of Almont, MI, grandchildren; Adam Besant, Eric and Anna Petko, Nicolas and Zacary Besant, Mathew Farley, Felicia and Dylan Welton, Reghan "Bobo" Besant, Curtis and Austin Hazen, 2 sisters; Virginia Swiltalski of Frankenmuth, MI, Susan and John Murphy of Flushing, MI, brother Richard Needham of Flint, MI, uncle Howard and Kay Besant, aunt Sally and Stan Hisong, many nieces and nephews, and special friend Pete Goodman. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Dennis Needham, and brother-in-law Joe Swiltalski.
