John Charles Newton Cawrse of St. Louis, MI was born on August 13, 1910 in Onaway, Michigan, the only son and oldest child of Charles and Susie Jane Cawrse, both recent immigrants from St. Neot, Cornwall, England. He died on September 12, 2008 following a brief illness. Jack, as he was known to friends and family, lived a long and full life, enjoying nothing more than his garden and flowers, his family, his independence, and his relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He came from a family that, despite losing 3 of his sisters in infancy or early childhood, is known for its longevity. His father died at age 92, sister Iris at age 94, and he is survived by one sister Hyacinth Allen of Bay City, age 91. Also surviving are daughters; Carol & Gary Leonard of St. Louis, MI, and Sondra & Bob Gianettino of Lansing, MI, grandchildren; Lisa Leonard of St. Louis, MI, Dan Leonard and fiancée Kim Anderson of Alma, MI. and Brian & Mary Lou Leonard of Kalamazoo, MI; and 5 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, the former Ella Shankel from Breckenridge, who died on November 4, 1992.
Jack came to Alma in 1926 with his family to work at Lobdell Industries following a fire that destroyed their Onaway plant. He was 16 at the time and already had left school to work to help support the family. Jack spent 31 years at the Leonard Refinery in Alma, working as a pipe fitter.
