John E. Haruska, age 65, of Ashley, Michigan died Sunday, April 1st, 2012 peacefully at home with his family by his side.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, Michigan on Wednesday, April 4th at 10:00 A.M., Rev. Fr. Marcel Portelli will officiate. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, Michigan.
Visitation will be held on Monday 6-8 P.M. and on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Johns Chapel St. Johns, Michigan. Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
John was born in St. Johns, Michigan on September 18, 1946, the son of Charles Carl and Josephine (Holmes) Haruska. He graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1964 and lived all of his life in Ashley.
On June 26 1965 he married Barbara R. Stehlik at St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Bannister, Michigan. John worked for Oldsmobile in Lansing for 30 years retiring in 1992. He was a Union Representative for the UAW.
John was an avid softball and baseball player, playing all over the State of Michigan. He coached junior high girls basketball for 17 years and he taught many people in his family about fishing, hunting and boating. John enjoyed being outdoors and hunting for morel mushrooms and aspargus. His grandchildren were very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them. He was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Haruska of Ashley, MI; 3 daughters, Shelly and John Mills of St. Johns, MI; Theresa Haruska of Flint, MI; Lori Haruska of St. Johns, MI; 4 grandsons, Dustin, Jake, Jackson and Keaton, his favorite granddaughter Keeley (Rosebud), 2 sisters, Ruth Ann and Richard Steffen of Brant, MI; Peggy Haruska of Corunna, MI; 1 brother, Terry and Kathy Haruska of St. Louis, Michigan. John was predeceased by his parents, 4 sisters, Virginia, Janet, Marie & Judy.
