John Mailand

John H. Mailand, age 86, of Alma, MI died Friday, January 24, 2014 at his home.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Senior Center in St. Louis, MI with Rev. Jim Austin officiating.

John was born in Gratiot County, Michigan on November 1, 1927, the son of Leonard and Cornelia (Van Beelen) Mailand. He served his country as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne in the U.S. Army. John married Axie M. Beard on September 29, 1950. He retired from GTE in 1985 after 33 years of service. John enjoyed the Detroit Tigers and watching the Lions. He liked gardening, especially growing tomatoes; visiting casinos and wintering in Florida.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years Axie Mailand of Alma, MI, son Ronald and Mary Mailand of Center Sandwich, NH, daughter Sharon and Donald Zimmerman of Ithaca, MI, son James Mailand of Belmont, MI, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and son-in-law Daniel Kenney of Ithaca, MI. John is also survived by sister Mary Pencak of St. Louis, MI, sister Cornelia and Orrin Hoxie of Alma, MI, sister Ruby Starry of Alma, MI, brother Leonard and Beverly Mailand of Lansing, MI, sister Elaine Joy Flegel of Alma, MI, and sister-in-law Inabeth Bratfish of Roscommon, MI. John was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Diane Marie Kenney, sister Catherine Coburn and brother Fred Mailand.
