Joseph John Scholtz, age 55, of St. Louis, Michigan passed away Friday, September 2, 2011 at Gratiot Medical Center, Alma, Michigan.
Funeral Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, St. Louis on Wednesday, September 7th at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Terri Bentley will officiate. Visitation will be held on Tuesday 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Louis Chapel St. Louis, Michigan.
Joseph was born in Alma, Michigan on January 4, 1956, the son of Harry and Elizabeth (DST) Scholtz. He graduated from St. Louis High School in 1974. He was a lifelong member of St. Louis.
Joe married Sheran (Carter) February 14, 1979 at the Weslyan Church in Alma, MI. They had been married for 32 years.
Joe was a maintenance worker at Alma Schools for 32 years. He involved himself in any activity and organization that he could. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in St. Louis, Alma Elk Lodge #1400, lifetime member of the Knights of Pythias, Michigan Sportsman Congress and Boy Scout Troop #609. He belonged to the Pine River Citizens Task force and the Citizens Action Group. He was the founder and chairman of the Annual Free Fishing Derby and was also a recipient of the "Spirit of St. Louis Award". Joe was just finishing his first term as the mayor of St. Louis and was up for re-election. He always considered himself very lucky to have the city council he had serving with him, it was a true partnership. Joe truly cherished his community and enjoyed the people he tried to serve. Joe was considered an environmentalist, he enjoyed the outdoors. Joe loved his wife, spending time with his children, grandchildren and his best friend Sinder. Many children in the neighborhood knew him as 'Grandpa". He will be deeply missed by his family and community.
He is survived by his wife, Sheran; 3 Children, Bill Beach; Wayne and Tammy Beach; Schawn and Roger Krapohl;7 Grandchildren, Miranda, Wayne and Kayleigh Beach; Kelson and Brendan Thomas; Jesseca and Keegan Krapohl; Sister Nora Smith. He is also survived by Several nieces & nephews, 1 Great Niece & 1 Great Nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-Law, Dale Smith.
