Joseph (Shag)Yurek

Joseph Stanley (Shag) Yurek, age 88, of St. Johns, MI died Sunday, January 25, 2015. Joe was born on February 1, 1926 in Duplain Township, MI, the son of Joseph Edward and Agnes Mary (Marek) Yurek. He married Margaret J. Carroll on May 21, 1949. Joe served his country in the U.S. Marines during WWII. He was a proud member of the Owosso-based Harold R. Cooley Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Joe was also a member of the American Legion Post #153 and VFW Post #4113 in St. Johns.

Joe retired from Fisher Body in 1977 after 31 years of service. After retiring, he worked as a magistrate for the Clinton County District Court and as a court officer for the Clinton County Circuit Court. Joe was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards and watching the Tigers. He was also an artist having some of his paintings on exhibit at the Clinton County Arts Council of which he was a member. He was also a member of the Men's Art Group.

Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Yurek of St. Johns, two sons, John Yurek and Holly Hansel of Fairbanks, AK and Daniel Yurek and Lydia Fulmer of St. Joseph, MI, one daughter, Carole and Gerald Mitchell of St. Johns, MI, three grandsons, Colin Mitchell and Lee McGuire of Boston, MA, Erik and Rachel Mitchell of Nashville, TN and Justin Fulmer of St. Joseph, MI and one great grandson, Yurek Mitchell. Joe is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Berry of Virginia Beach, VA and Joanne and Daryll Heinrich of Ovid, MI. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Clark, one brother, Robert Yurek and foster son, Dennis LeVeck.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Osgood Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Michael Williams presiding. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at the funeral home with a Vigil Service prayed at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Sparrow Hospice Services, 1210 W.
