Joseph B. "Joe" Thering, age 77, of Elsie, MI died Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Johns, Michigan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, Michigan on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Raymond Urbanek officiating. Burial will take place at St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery Shepherd, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 6-8 P.M., Friday, December 14, 2012 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, Michigan, and on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service from 10-11 A.M. Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm Friday at the funeral home.
Joe was born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on November 23, 1935, the son of Elmer and Ann L. (McDonald) Thering. He graduated from Beal City High School, and attended college at Central Michigan University graduating with a Master Degree in Education. On August 13, 1960 Joe married RoseMarie Feltman at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Shepherd, Michigan.
Joe was a teacher and principal for the Ovid-Elsie School system for 31 years and taught school in North Branch, Michigan for 3 years. He enjoyed gardening, camping with his family and was an avid sports fan. He resided most of his life in the Mid-Michigan area. Joe was a member of the Elsie Lions Club for 45 years and a past district governor, and was also a member of the Lions Air Force Squadron, Knights of Columbus, Elsie Historical Society, MEA, and Secondary Principals. He was a football coach for 25 years and an official for Track and Cross Country sports for 43 years. Joe was also a member of the Elsie Dairy Festival Committee and a member of the Mens Glee Club in Mesa, AZ. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI, Knights of Columbus, member of the Mens Club and served his church as an usher.
He is survived by his wife RoseMarie Thering of Elsie, MI, daughter Denise and Eric Chamberlain of Orlando, FL, son Douglas and Bryn Thering of Olivet, MI, grandchildren; Brock, Tyler and Tripp, sisters; MaryLou and Lyle Willoughby, Jean Marie and Russ Messersmith, Elizabeth Miller, brothers; Robert F. and Paula Thering, Thomas E. and Ellie Thering, John A. and Connie Thering, James R. and Sara Thering, Patrick W. Thering, brother in law Richard and Margaret Feltman and many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, brother in law Ken Miller, and sister in law, Martha Feltman.
