Julia Mary Smelik age 91 of Alma, formerly of St. Louis, Michigan, died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma, Michigan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Louis, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Kevin Maksym will officiate with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel.
Julia was born on June 4, 1913 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Stefan & Mary Scholastika ( Markowska ) Hilsky. She graduated from a public school in Wayne County in 1930. She resided in Detroit, MI until moving to St. Louis in 1945. Julia married Anthony John "Tony" Smelik on May 14, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, Tony died March 17, 1985.
Julia was a retired legal secretary for Melvin Hutchinson of Detroiter Mobile Homes and a medical secretary for Dr. Haverbusha�(TM)s office. She was a member of Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Louis, Michigan. She was also a member of the Altar Society, volunteered for Gratiot Community Hospital Auxiliary, and she enjoyed crafting, knitting and cooking.
She is survived by 1 daughter Janet & Ormand Staines of Fenwick, MI, 1 son Gerald & Lillian Smelik of Hamilton, Ohio, 5 grandchildren & 4 great grandchildren, and 1 sister Helen McVeety of Detroit, MI. She is predeceased by her parents.
Memorials may be made to Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Louis, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel, 117 North East Street, St. Louis, Michigan
