Karen Kaye Kindel

May 23, 1939 — January 22, 2025

Ithaca

Karen Kaye (Cummings) Kindel, born May 23, 1939, in Alma, Michigan, was the beloved daughter of the late Betty and Bill Cummings, a sister to the late Arden Cummings. Her mother Betty passed away in 1985, her father passed away in 1992, and Arden passed away in 1982. She spent her entire life living in Ithaca, Michigan, a place she cherished deeply. Karen will proudly tell you that not only did she live in Ithaca her entire life, but she also lived on the same road her entire life.
Known for her strong ties to her past, Karen remained in touch with classmates and lifelong friends, always remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions with thoughtful attention. Her memory was a treasure of details, and she took great pride in nurturing her relationships and preserving important milestones.
Karen was married to Ron Kindel for 14 years before their divorce in 1972. Together, they raised four children—Ronda Peet (the late Bob Peet), Kelli Kindel (Ray Volkema), Keelee Bebow (Jeff Bebow), and Rod Kindel (Barb Wight). Throughout her life, Karen remained devoted to her children, offering direct advice, unwavering support, and a sharp wit that left a lasting impression on those around her. She was also a proud grandmother and great-grandmother cherishing each new addition to her family “Granny” to: Brittany Peet, Emily Peet (Tony Macklem), Brent (Monica) Bebow, Tucker (Jami) Bebow, Lexy (Andrew) Psyhos, Mackenzie (Rickie) Velasco, Kyle Kindel (Adriana Romero), and Jacob Kindel. Great-Granny to: Jayden, Jackson and Cameron Macklem; Reed Wolverton, Kinsley Olejiniczak; Isaiah Westervelt, Kennedy Kindel; Archer and AnnaBelle Psyhos; Brantley and Harper Bebow; Boston and Walker Bebow. The love she had for her growing family is a legacy that continues to inspire and connect generations.
Karen worked at Wolverine/Hush Puppies for 45 years before retiring in 2007. Her time at the company was marked by dedication and hard work, and she formed many lasting friendships with her colleagues. A perfect day for Karen would often include friends stopping by her house throughout the day, lunch with her “lunch bunch” at the Hearthstone and shopping with her daughters, and then an evening out for dinner. She loved nothing more than being surrounded by the people she cared about.
A lover of memories, Karen was an avid collector of photographs, mementos, and other keepsakes. Her home was filled with treasures that told the stories of her life and the people she loved. She had an unparalleled ability to remember details (like anniversaries and birthdays) and celebrate important moments, preserving the past with a sense of joy and purpose for future generations. You could often find Karen engaged in talk about her beloved Ithaca Yellow Jackets.
In addition to her family, Karen is survived by her once in a lifetime friends - Billie and Jim Kench.
