Katherine Monroe age 96 of Ithaca, Michigan died Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Gratiot Medical Center Alma, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Ithaca Chapel on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 1:00 PM. Pastor David McBride will officiate with burial at Greenwood Cemetery Newark Township, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.
Katherine was born in Alma, Michigan on April 1, 1909 the daughter of John Leonard and Sarah E.( Kenyon ) Heinrichs. She resided most of her life in Ithaca, Michigan. She graduated from Ithaca High School with the class of 1927. She then went to County Normal (CMU) for 1 year to become a teacher. She taught for one year at Ringle School. She decided teaching wasn't her calling and entered the Henry Ford Hospital Nursing Program. Katherine attended there for three years and graduated in the upper third of her class in 1933. She was asked to stay on and work for the hospital. While there she met Dr. Rex Wilcox and he asked her to come to work for him. When she came home Katherine married her "Farmer Boy" Alfred A. Monroe in Clare, Michigan on July 24, 1935. She worked at Wilcox unitl it became a nursing home. She also worked as a Private Duty Nurse for Dr. Budge. She then worked at Gratiot Community Hospital for 10 years and retired in 1970. She enjoyed her flower garden, knitting, crocheting, and sharing food with friends. She loved to travel with Alfred especially to Drummond Island. She was a member of the Ithaca United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son John Alfred & Sally Monroe of Ithaca, MI, daughter Ruthanne & Gordon Larry of Ithaca, MI, 4 grandchildren; Becky & Steve Brock of Daggett, MI, Susan & Duane Sjoquist of Whiteland, IN, Jeff & Shawn Larry of Ithaca, MI, Jody Larry of Auburn Hills, MI, 8 great grandchildren; Anne, Jacob, & Levi Brock, Clara & Duane Sjoquist, Garr, Tianna, and Morgan Larry. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Alfred on November 8, 1996 and baby Philip.
Memorials may be made to Ithaca Senior Activity Building. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Ithaca Chapel.
