LaVern D. Smith, age 87, of Sumner, MI died Friday, April 26th, 2013, at Warwick Living Center in Alma, MI. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Ithaca Chapel on Tuesday, April 30th, at 11:00 A.M. Pastor George Showers will officiate. Burial will take place at New Haven Township Cemetery in Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes and also one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
Vern was born and raised in New Haven Township, Gratiot County, Michigan on September 26, 1925, the son of Donald Chase and Artimissa (Woodward) Smith. He graduated from Fulton High School with the class of 1943. He married Kathleen Evitts on March 6, 1948, in Ithaca, MI. He served in the US Army as a Tech 5 Medic during WWII in the Philippines. Vern retired from Lobdell-Emery in 1987 and enjoyed farming his crops and raising cattle. Vern was a lifelong resident of Gratiot County. He enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren's athletic events. He loved the outdoors, sucker fishing, deer hunting, the Detroit Tigers, and camping.
Vern is survived by his wife of 65 years Kathleen (Evitts) Smith of Sumner, MI; son, Kevin and Renee Smith of New Haven Twp, MI and their children: Matthew Smith and Rita Ermatinger of Sumner, MI; Katie Smith and Ian Scarborough of Rohnert Park, CA. Daughter Kathy and Michael Doran of New Haven Twp, MI and their daughters: Bethany and Joseph Vozar along with great-granddaughter Nora Vozar and great-grandson Michael (M.J.) Vozar, and Allison Doran of Ithaca, MI. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, son, Michael Smith; sisters, Iva Spencer, Beatrice Derrick, brothers, Clifford, Chauncey, Donald and Leo Smith.
