Lawrence Alwyn "Larry" Nicholas, age 90, of Elsie, MI passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Oliver Woods Retirement Village, Owosso, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held at Elsie United Methodist Church   Elsie, MI on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Justin Shepard officiating.  Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery Ovid, MI.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI.

Larry was born in Owosso, Michigan on March 10, 1925, the son of Alwyn and Gertrude (Haker) Nicholas.  Larry received his Bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University and his Masters Degree from Michigan State University.  On December 28, 1961 Larry married Bertha Anne Escamilla in San Antonio, Texas; Bea died on October 17, 2002. Then on February 11, 2012 he married Eileen Barnes at Elsie United Methodist Church.  Larry was the principal of E.E. Knight Elementary School for 22 years. He enjoyed traveling, and was a big history buff. Spending time with his grandchildren was very important to him.  Larry resided most of his life in the Elsie area.  He was a member of the Elsie Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the Elsie United Methodist Church, Elsie, MI.

He is survived by his wife Eileen Nicholas of Elsie, MI, 2 daughters; Cindy and Bryan DeMass of Haslett, MI, Brenda Nicholas of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, 1 son Michael and Julie Nicholas of South Bend, IN, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, step children; Debra Barnes, Denise and John Perry, Delayne and Darrin Jackson, 10 step grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren, and 2 sisters; Norma Bezrutch, and Beverly Scheiern.  Larry was predeceased by his parents, his wife Bea, 2 brothers; Berwyn and Russell Nicholas, and step son Hal Barnes
