Leona Belle Rumbaugh, age 94, of A Ewing Estate, AFC, Dewitt formerly of St. Johns and Elsie, MI went home to be with the Lord, Monday, June 2, 2014 in DeWitt, Michigan.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns, MI on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 11:00 A.M with Dr. Donald Ferris-McCann officiating. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Leona was born in St. Johns, Michigan on July 4, 1919, the daughter of Leonard and Bessie (Grubaugh) Stockwell. She attended Lamb Country School in St. Johns, Essex School, Central School and graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School, St. Johns, MI. Leona married Elwyn B. Rumbaugh on January 9, 1945 in St. Johns, MI. They lived on the Rumbaugh Centennial Farm in Bannister, MI for 34 years until Elwyn passed away in June of 1979. She then moved to Elsie, MI.
Leona worked at Fisher Body in Lansing during WWII. She worked at Redmonds in Owosso and Ithaca for 6 years and retired from ITT Hancock (Lears) after 15 years. Leona did volunteer work; delivering meals on wheels and handing out food to the needy. She was also a reader to the children in the Elsie grade school for several years and a 4-H leader for 6 years. She loved traveling, playing cards, visiting shut-ins, reading, roller skating, and water aerobics. She was a member of Elsie United Methodist Church, Elsie, MI, as well as the UMW, Esther Circle, Elsie Literary Club, Bunco Club, and the Kerr Holiday Travel Club. She was also Mission Chairman at the church she loved.
She is survived by her son Larry and Susan Rumbaugh of Nashua, NH, 2 granddaughters; Tricia of Hollis, NH, and Brenda of Nashua, NH, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Ethel and Don Sutliff, 2 brothers; Oscar and Mae Stockwell of St. Johns, MI, and Emerson Kenneth Sr. and Betty Stockwell of St. Johns, MI.
