Loren Humm age 63 of Breckenridge, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Covenant Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Loren enjoyed life and in accordance with his wishes a "celebration of life" will be held at Breckenridge United Methodist Church on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Dale Golden and Pastor Steve Gulick officiating. Burial will take place at Ridgelawn Cemetery Breckenridge, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Loren was born in Alma on November 18, 1948, the son of Elmer and Ruth (Gulick) Humm. He was married to Edith Ann Bush on September 9, 1972 in Florien, Louisiana at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Loren served in the US Army in Company A, 2d Battalion, 2d Brigade from April 1968 to January 1970. He served his country for a year in Vietnam. Loren was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service medal with three Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Expert (Rifle), Sharpshooter (Pistol).
After returning from service Loren returned to farming and farmed until his recent illness. He sold seed for Great Lakes Hybrids and Betaseed. He was a member of the Breckenridge United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge of Alma, the VFW in St. Louis, and a past Master of Breckenridge Lodge #406. He served on the Gratiot County Farm Bureau Board, and was the Alma Sugarbeet Growers Association President for several years, the Steering Committee for the purchase of Michigan Sugar Company by growers, and as a founding Board Member for the past 10 years of Michigan Sugar Company.
Loren is survived by his wife of 40 years, Edith of Breckenridge, sons; Michael (Terra) Humm of Canton, Lee Humm of Breckenridge, Joshua (Samantha) Humm of Ithaca, and Dustin (special friend Meredith Mayan) Humm of Breckenridge. The pride of his heart were his grandchildren Tresten, Seth and Dain Humm of Canton and Isabelle Humm of Ithaca. He is also survived by his three brothers; Vance (Evelyn) Humm, Dwight (Norinne) Humm, and Theron (Sandra) Humm, sisters; Karen Ray and Corinne (Richard) Warmbold, sister-in-law Ouida Leach of Louisiana, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.
