Louis Albert Schafer, age 90, of Fowler, MI, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, MI, at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 18, 2022, with Rev. Fr. Eric Weber presiding. Burial with military honors will take place at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Goerge Chapel, Fowler, MI, on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 2-8 P.M. with the family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. A Rosary will be prayed at 3 & 7 P.M.at the funeral home.
Louis was born in Westphalia, Michigan on September 24, 1932, the son of Louis J. and Matilda (Schlicht) Schafer. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 8, 1957, Louis married Jean Heckman in Pewamo, Michigan. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage, prior to her passing on December 18, 2017.
For over 35 years, Louis enjoyed working for General Motors. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fowler VFW. Louis loved to read. He enjoyed going out to dinner and playing cards with his siblings. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and faithfully attended daily Mass. Most of all, Louis loved his family.
He is survived by his children: Michael Schafer of Christiansburg, VA; Vicki (Paul) Horak of Fowler, MI; and Richard (Sandy) Schafer of Fowler, MI; eight grandchildren: Whitney (Matt) Zirkle, Annah Horak, Thomas (Marlena) Horak, Gabrielle (Arthur) Richardson, Sidney Horak, Dominic Horak, Roman Schafer, and Nicholai Schafer; five great-grandchildren: Mark, Daniel, and Jeana Zirkle; and Henry and Samuel Horak. He is also survived by six sisters: Sister Pauline Schafer, Sister Caroline Schafer, Irene Ayles, Helen Thelen, Julia Schueller, and Mary (Dave) Antes; two sisters-in-law: Donna Schafer and Betty Schafer; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jean, two brothers: Leon Schafer and Julius Schafer; and two infant siblings: Mary and Julius.
