Margie was born on January 24, 1932, on the family farm near Remus Michigan, the oldest daughter of Henry and Johanna (Boettcher) Smith. Like many children raised on small farms during the Depression and WWII, Margie grew up knowing a life of hard work and “going without”. What her parents lacked in material possessions, they made up for with love and laughter. Margie graduated from Remus High School, then lived with and cared for the children of 2 different Mt. Pleasant area families. In 1953 she married Robert “Bob” Remer of St. Johns. Bob and Margie lived for several years in Lansing. In the late 1960s they and their sons, Bill and Paul, built the Eureka area home where Bob and Margie lived until their deaths. Bob preceded Margie in death in 2002. Margie loved flower gardening, church, and studying the Bible. She was raised in the Lutheran Church and later in life attended Maple Rapids Methodist Church with her neighbors.
She is survived by her sons; William Remer of Idaho, and Paul Remer, granddaughter Heather and Wesley Schwartz of Lewiston Idaho, grandson Aaron Remer, of Lewiston Idaho, grandson Shane Remer of Long Beach California, brother Soenckie Smith of Remus, sisters; Louise Smith of Remus and Arlene Parrish of Lansing, sister-in-law Carolyn Smith of Bayport, brother-in-law Rolland “Ron” Brand of Stanton, and several nieces and nephews. Margie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, older brother Louis Smith and younger sister Nathalie Brand.
Margie found joy in giving to those less fortunate, and requested that donations be sent to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Online condolences can be sent to www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes - Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI.
