Mary Ellen Griffin age 81 of Corunna, Michigan died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at her home
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel. Mr. Jim Hardwick will officiate with burial at Pine Tree Cemetery, Corunna, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.
Mary was born in Corunna, Michigan on April 7, 1923 the daughter of Richard & Mary Jane ( Angus ) Tanks. She resided in the Corunna area all her life. She owned and operated the Griffin Home for the Aged in Corunna, MI. It was her life and passion taking care of others for over 55 years. Mary & her mother Mary Jane Tanks started taking people in their home in 1946. When Marya�(TM)s mother died in 1957, she took it upon herself to keep the home in operation as her mother asked her to do. In 1958 a new wing was built, holding 19 residents. After 31 years at the same location, Mary was forced to close the doors at the Griffin Adult Foster Care Home on Walnut Street due to high overhead. Mary built the new facility on N. Shiawassee Street in 1974. The new Griffin home for the Aged was licensed for 56 residents. Once again Mary was forced to close her doors in April 2000 due to the lack of finances.
Mary loved to cook Sunday dinners for her family and friends and she loved watching her grandchildren fish in her pond.
Mary is survived by her son Otto & Mary Nacovsky of Corunna, MI, grandchildren; Mary Jane Elliott of Door, MI, Priscilla & Jim Hall of Owosso, MI, great grandchildren; Michael Letts, & Wyatt, Kadin, & Vidalia Hall, step great grandchildren; Cory, Eric & Tara Hall, & Jaden Davis. She is predeceased by her parents, sister Evelyn Remaile, and 2 brothers Henry & Herbert Tanks
