Mary Jane Wassa, age 89, of Ovid, Michigan died Friday, December 30, 2011 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, Michigan.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Herb Wheelock officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 1, 2012 and Monday, January 2, 2012 from 2-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Mary Jane was born in Chapin, Michigan on April 12, 1922, the daughter of Clayton S. and Eathel L. (Francis) Evans. She graduated with class of 1940 from Elsie High School. On July 5, 1940 she married James John Wassa in Saginaw, Michigan. They were married for 48 years before Jim died July 30, 1987. She found a companion in her life for 19 years, Neil Woodbury who also predeceased her. Mary Jane had worked for Universal Electric, Vaughn Seed Company, and Williams Hardware. She had resided most of her life in the Elsie area and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #502 and the ZCBJ Lodge #225, Bannister, Michigan. She was also a member of Chapin United Methodist Church.
She is survived by 2 daughters; Carol and Ralph Nixon of Bannister, MI, Sherry Huss of Ovid, MI, son Jack and Joyce Wassa of Traverse City, MI, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Jim, 1 sister Esther Hoffer, and 2 brothers; Lyle Evans and Leo Ockerman.
