Mary Esther Wheeler, age 85, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at The Laurels of Carson City.
A Family Graveside Service will be held at Vinewood Cemetery, Edmore, MI, in the spring.
Mary Esther (Smith) Wheeler was born on September 2, 1928, in Elm Hall, Michigan, to Edmund and Lottie (Worthing) Smith. Mary lived all her young and early adult life in Gratiot County. Mary was the third of eight children, Robert, Ann, Helen, John Harold, Hildred, William and Lee. On January 1, 1964, Mary married Ivan (Carl) Wheeler in St. Louis, Michigan. Together they raised seven children who all survive her; Darlene (John) Baker, of Alma, Marian (Tom) Wright, of Alma, Mark (Lucia) MacNabb, of St. Louis, Ivan (Teresa) Wheeler, of Ithaca, Bryan (Michelle) MacNabb, of Buffalo, TX, Carla (Ray) Falconbridge, of Grand Rapids, and Kevin Wheeler, of Edmore. Mary was also blessed with 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
In the 1970's Mary went back to school and received her nursing degree from Mid-Michigan Community College as an LPN. Mary worked at Carson City Hospital for several years on the maternity ward and later went to work at the Mt. Pleasant State home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. A few years later, she started an Adult Foster Care Home in her own home for the physically and mentally impaired. Mary was a wonderful cook. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and crafts. Her biggest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ann, Helen and Hildred, brothers Robert and John Harold, and two grandsons, Braeden & Edmund.
