Mary was known as "Go Go Mary", she was always active and busy doing something. She enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing, sewing, quilting and she loved playing games. Mary and Gene spent many happy winters in Florida where they were surrounded by family and church family.  Mary was proud of her Dutch heritage and collected many items associated with her roots. She had a jovial nature and liked being in the middle of everything going on with family, especially with her grandkids and great grandkids, this is where she was the happiest.

She was a member of East Washington United Brethren Church. Mary and Gene were very active volunteers in the church. Mary lived her life serving the Lord. She was a vessel for the Lord to work through, setting a Christian example, leading her family and friends to their faith. She could be found sending greeting cards and well wishes to church friends and taking food to shut ins. Mary had a big heart and always put others before herself.
