Norman Ara Blakely age 91 of Elsie, Michigan died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Ovid Healthcare Center Ovid, MI.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, MI on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2007 from 6-8 P.M. and Friday, May 11, 2007 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Rosary will be prayed Friday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home.

Norman was born in Erie County, New York on October 13, 1915 the son of Dee Ara and Mary ( Dye ) Blakely. He moved to Clinton County when he was 22 and lived in Elsie for the past 60 years. He graduated from Forestville High School with the class of 1933. He then attended MSU. Norman married Elizabeth Katherine Vitek on April 1, 1944 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, MI. He retired from MSU in 1983 where he worked as a research technician in the Department of Horticulture. He has also worked for the D.H.I.A. He loved gardening and flowers. He enjoyed going to Smith Camp in the summer as a 4-H Leader, and he enjoyed woodworking. Norman was a member of St. Cyrils Catholic Church, Bannister, MI as well as the Elsie Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #502, and a former 4-H Leader.

He is survived by wife Elizabeth Blakely of Elsie, MI, 3 daughters; Katherine Marie Blakely of Brentwood, TN, Marie & Mike Blakely of Franklin, TN, Helen & Mike Potter of Middleton, MI, 1 son Norman & Tracie Blakely of Elsie, MI, 6 grandchildren; Katrina & Jake Stewart of Ashley, MI, Norman Paul & Amanda Blakely of St. Johns, MI, Mary Agnes Blakely of Williamston, MI, Joseph Michael Thelen of Franklin, TN, Joel Thelen of Franklin, TN, Joshua Potter of Middleton, MI, 1 great grandson Norman Hunter Blakely of St. Johns, MI. He is predeceased by parents, 4 sisters, and 5 brothers.

Memorials may be made to a Charity of the Donors Choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
