Oliver C. Darling age 77 of Elsie, Michigan died Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Carson City Hospital Carson City, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Edwin Snook will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2006 from 6-8 P.M. & Friday, December 8, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.
Oliver was born in Eaton County, Michigan on December 17, 1928 the son of Vern and Gladys ( Thompson ) Darling. He resided most of his life in the Ovid-Elsie Area graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1947. He played the bass drum in band. Oliver married Barbara Fruchey on May 24, 1947 at the parsonage in Ovid, Michigan. Oliver owned and operated Darling's Hardware with his brother Harvey since June of 1957 when they bought Wooley's Hardware. He ran the Elsie Hardware until 1979, and then worked in Ovid until 1991 when he semi-retired until they closed in 1996. He was a Master Electrician and held a Doctor Degree in small tool repair from Wisconsin. At age 16 he was the youngest licensed pilot to fly from the Elsie airport, and in his early years he was assist scout master in Ovid. Oliver was an active member of Elsie United Methodist Church where he served on special committees. He was also a member of the Elsie Masonic Lodge, and a Noble Grand in the Odd Fellow Lodge. He was a former president of the Elsie People Association, now known as the Elsie Improvement Association, where he also served as the treasurer for awhile. He also served as treasurer for the Clinton Memorial Hospital for years. He was the Grand Marshal of the Elsie Dairy Festival in 2002.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Darling of Elsie, MI, daughter-in-law Regene & the late David Darling of Elsie, MI, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brothers; Harvey & Doris Darling of Ovid, MI, Ivan & Ruth Ann Darling of Engidane, MI, and several nieces & nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, son David on May 16, 2004 & son Dennis on March 8, 1999.
Memorials may be made to Elsie United Methodist Church. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
