Oscar L. Stockwell died on December 30, 2008 at Banner Thunderbird Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 91 years old. He had been living with his daughter in Arizona for the past 13 months. He was born March 17, 1917 in St. Johns, Michigan, the son of Leonard and Bessie (Grubaugh) Stockwell. He served in the US Army during World War II. He worked as a general contractor and later as a cement finisher, and custodian of St. Johns public schools. Oscar was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Johns. On December 13, 1942, Oscar married Sarah Mae Matheson of Columbus, Georgia and they enjoyed 63 years together.
He is survived by two daughters, Mildred (David) Harris of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Bonnie (Gary) Pyles of Phoenix, Arizona, one son, Charles “Chuck” (Shelley) Stockwell of Brighton, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and one sister, Leona Rumbaugh of St. Johns. Oscar was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Mae Stockwell, a granddaughter, Charyl Stockwell, a sister, Ethel Sutliff, and a brother, Kenneth Stockwell.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 7 at the First Baptist Church, St. Johns, burial at Fairview Cemetery, Brighton with Rev. Tim Knaus officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 P.M. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 East Cass St, St. Johns, MI. 48879. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in St. Johns or Charyl Stockwell Academy in Brighton.
