Polly Kay Richards, age 72, passed away Sunday, February 18th, 2024, in Eureka, Michigan.
Polly was born on December 11, 1951, in St. Johns, Michigan, the daughter of William “Bill” Palmer and Jennie Dale (Hutton) Richards. Polly was the first of six children. As a child of a large family, she enjoyed many activities when she was young. Her family was active in The First Congregational Church attending many family social events. She enjoyed hiking, bicycling, picnicking, attending concerts, and visiting the MSU museum, Dairy Store, and carillon with her parents and siblings. She loved to draw and write stories as a child. Many weeks in the summer were spent enjoying the family cabin at Higgins Lake and learning to ski in the winter.
Polly was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young teenager. She bravely followed a very difficult path throughout her adult life. She graduated from St. Johns High School. Polly worked for many years as a dispatcher for her dad, Bill, when he first started the Blue Bus in St. Johns above Parr’s Drug Store on Main Street. Polly continued to be involved with family, especially enjoying time with her mother, Jennie, who kept her involved, and engaged.
Polly was a resident of The Eureka House during the past several years where she was cared for by many wonderful staff. She particularly enjoyed their recreational director who planned outings and events. The family is very grateful for their care.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Jennie Richards. She is survived by her siblings: Lynn Richards, Chris Richards, Jill Hejlm, Jay Richards, and Jeff Richards; and nieces: Leslie, Melissa and Kate; and nephews: Jacob, Alex, and Sam.
Polly was very intelligent, kind, and brave and she will be missed.
