R. Catherine (Cay) DeYoung, age 84, of St. Louis, MI passed away Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at Gratiot Medical Center , Alma, MI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Church St. Louis, MI on Wednesday, April 29th at 10:00 A.M., Rev. Fr. Kevin Maksym will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 27th from 6-8 PM and Tuesday, April 28th from 2-8 PM with family present 2-4 & 6-8 PM a Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 PM at Smith Family Funeral Homes St. Louis Chapel, St. Louis, MI. .
Cay was born in Pewamo, Michigan on May 31, 1924 the 6th of 13 children to Oscar and Dora (Wolshied) Cook. Cay married Paul "Bud" Eldredge moving to St. Louis and later married Dr. Jacob DeYoung.
She worked for Alma College as Administrative Assistant, Secretary to the Dean of Natural Science and later as Secretary to the President retiring in 1985. Cay liked gardening, traveling, reading, going to the opera & boating. She found enjoyment in watching the birds & butterflies. Very active in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Church including helping to make prayer quilts. Cay volunteered her time at Schnepps and Meals on Wheels. Family especially her grandchildren & great-grandchildren were very important to her.
Cay is survived by her son Paul Jay and Malva Eldredge of Riverdale, MI; daughter Sherida "Sheri" and Don Burch of St. Louis, MI; step son Jay and Cindy DeYoung of Traverse City, MI; step son Glenn and Laura DeYoung of Grand Ledge, MI; step son Thomas DeYoung of Maine; grandchildren Paul Jay II and Ashley Eldredge of Sanford, MI; Heather and Robert Uberroth of Saginaw, MI;
Bill Gall of Clio, MI; Dion and Carolyn Burch of Kansas; Eric and Amberlee Gall of St. Louis, MI; Lisa Peterson of Stanton, MI; Shawn and Adam DeYoung of Grand Ledge, MI; Tim and Robyn DeYoung of Traverse City, MI; Tristan DeYoung of Maine; 16 Great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandchild; sister Bernita Fedewa of Pewamo, MI; sister Dorothy Golata of Lansing, MI; sister Ella Thelen of Williamston, MI; sister Marcia Cook of Ionia, MI; brother Jim and Jean Cook of Lansing, MI; brother Don and Barb Cook of Lansing, MI; brother Roy and Dee Cook of Fenwick, MI; sister Jenny and Bob Weber of Ohio; brother Leon and Jeanne Cook of Lansing, MI
Cay was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Paul Eldredge & Dr. Jacob DeYoung, step-son, Steven DeYoung, grandson Matthew Burch, sisters Isabelle Wilson and Angela Coonrod also brother David Cook
